Volume adventures in P7CL
Exploring Volume in Primary 7CL
Primary 7CL have been diving deep into the world of volume using the CPA approach – Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract – to build a strong understanding of mathematical concepts.
We started with hands-on investigations, using cubes to explore the volume of irregular 3D shapes.
Next, we moved on to regular shapes, where the class uncovered a method to calculate the volume of cuboids and cubes without physically counting cubes. This breakthrough showed how concrete experiences lead to abstract thinking.
One of the highlights was creating cube numbers. Pupils predicted how many cubes would be needed to build bigger and bigger cubes – and had lots of fun testing their predictions!
You can see from the photos how busy we were and how much we enjoyed these lessons. It was a fantastic way to learn maths with deeper understanding and plenty of creativity!
